White Sesame Seeds have a rich history dating back thousands of years. They are small but mighty, typically measure 2-3 millimeters in a unique tear-drop shape on plants 3-6 feet in height. Sesame seeds are prized for their oil and nutritional value and have been cultivated in ancient civilizations. These tiny seeds symbolize wisdom and immortality in various cultures and are often associated with good luck and prosperity. Sprinkle sesame seeds on bread and rolls for a delightful crunch and nutty flavor. Or grind sesame seeds to make tahini, a key ingredient in hummus and other Middle Eastern dishes, or to make toasted sesame oil, a key ingredient in Asian stir-fries, sauces, and dressings. Or simple garnish salads, noodles, and sushi rolls for added texture and flavor.

Planting Instructions:

Soil Preparation:

Choose an area with heavy, well-draining soil that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Several weeks before planting, prepare dig or plow the soil 8-10 inches deep and rake up several times to break up large clods. Work the soil when it is dry enough to not stick to garden tools. You may optionally spread 2-3 inches of organic material, such as manure, compost, peat moss, or rotted hay and mix into the top 4-6 inches of soil.

Planting:

Broadcast seeds or sow in rows. For row-planting, use a fishing line or hoe handle to create a 1/2 inch deep furrow down the center of the ridge. Plant 1-2 seeds in the furrows spaced 6 inches apart within the rows. Cover lightly with loose soil then sprinkle with water.

Planting Depth: 1/2 inch
Within-Row Spacing:
6 inches
Between-Row Spacing:
18 inches

Care During the Season:

Watering: Water plants moderately. If the soil moisture is low, water but avoid waterlogging soil. Try to avoid wetting foliage to prevent diseases.

Weeding: Keep plants free of weeds, which rob weak root systems of nutrients and moisture.

Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sevin is a synthetic option. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, please read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions.

Diseases: Disease can happen in cloudy, damp weather. Check plants daily and treat with an approved fungicide if diseases do appear. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides are available for use. Please always follow label directions.

Harvesting:

Sesame is ready to harvest when the pods turn brown and dry. Harvest by cutting or uprooting whole plants. Dry harvested sesame plants before threshing to separate sesame seeds from the plants. Clean seeds by winnowing.
