Bitter Melon or Bitter Gourd, also known as "Bitter Squash," "Balsam Pear," "Karela," or "Goya," is a tropical vine that belongs to the gourd family, widely grown in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean for its green-skinned, smooth-warted fruit. Bitter melon originated in India and was introduced into China in the 14th century. It is used for both culinary and medicinal properties to treat treat diabetes, cancer, viral infections, and immune disorders.
