The Mississippi Purple Cowpea also known as a "Southern Field Pea" or "Brown Crowder Pea" is a prolific yielder with 8-inch long pods that contain 12-15 smooth, tan peas that are closely bunched together (hence the nickname "crowder" peas) and can shell out easily. These peas are incredibly productive and heat tolerant, making them an easy pick for Southerners. The Mississippi Purple Cowpea has a brighter red/pink pod compared to the dark purple pod of the Mississippi Purplehull Cowpea. Crowders are also incredible source of dietary fiber and protein, which makes this classic a no-brainer!
