Bermuda Grass is the ultimate high-performance, warm-season lawn famous for its unrivaled durability and fine-textured beauty! This sun-loving superstar establishes a dense, beautiful carpet of grass that thrives in the heat and stands up to the most intense activity, making it the perfect choice for athletic fields and busy backyards across the Southern and Transition zones. Bermuda Grass boasts exceptional heat and drought tolerance, allowing it to stay green and lush through punishing summer conditions; its amazing capacity for self-repair and rapid growth, quickly filling in bare or damaged spots; its superior wear tolerance, making it the toughest turf available for active areas. Bermuda forms a fine-bladed, dense sod, which helps crowd out weeds and has the ability to be maintained at an extremely short mowing height for a manicured, golf-course quality appearance.

Planting Instructions:

Soil Preparation:

Start by clearing the area of any debris, rocks, or old vegetation, then loosen the top 2–3 inches of soil with a rake or tiller to create a soft, workable surface. Mix in compost or topsoil to improve nutrient content and drainage, and break up any large clumps to ensure even seed-to-soil contact. Grade the area so water flows away from buildings, then lightly tamp the soil to create a firm but not compacted seedbed. Finish by raking the surface smooth, ensuring it’s level and ready for even seed distribution.

Planting:

Since Bermuda is a warm-season grass, plant in late spring to early summer when soil temperatures consistently reach 65F-70F (May-July). Broadcast the seeds evenly across the surface at the seeding rate of 2-3 pounds per 1000 square feet for new lawns, or 1-2 pounds per 1,000 square feet for overseeding existing lawns (8-12 lbs per acre or 4-8 lbs per acre for overseeding). Because grass seeds are small, gently rake or drag the soil so the seeds are covered no deeper than 1/4 inch, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact without burying them too deeply. Lightly firm the area with a roller or by walking over it to secure the seeds in place and ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Water lightly but consistently to keep the soil moist until germination, then gradually reduce watering as the seedlings establish. Once the grass reaches about 3 inches tall, begin mowing and continue to provide regular care to encourage strong, dense growth.

Planting Depth: 1/8-1/4 inch
Spacing: Broadcast
Seeding Rate: 2-3 lbs/1000 sqft, or 1-2 lbs/1000 sqft for overseeding

Care During the Season:

Maintain consistent moisture, especially during hot or dry periods. Mow frequently at a low height—around 1 to 2 inches—to encourage dense, carpet-like growth and help crowd out weeds. Water deeply but infrequently, aiming for about 1 inch per week, adjusting during hot or drought conditions. Feed with nitrogen-rich fertilizer throughout the warm months to support vigorous growth and rich color, and aerate compacted soil to improve root health. Stay on top of weed control and watch for pests like armyworms, treating promptly to maintain a lush, resilient Bermuda lawn all season long.
